Aztec Dancers
Make
a trip back in time as the Aztec dancers gather, sharing their rich cultural
heritage. Music and Dance are the songs of the soul.
These
dances are ceremonial and religious. Much effort is made to keep them pure and
true to their ancient culture of their people. The dance begins as the
dancers are summoned to a circle. There the Conk Shell (the Alecocolli),
the tall drum called the Two tongued drum (Teponaztli), flutes and rattles gift
the music to begin the circle dance. The elder women uses the copal to
bless each dancer. Light shimmers off their ceremonial clothing with many
feathers. Seed shells sing as the dancers begin the lively dance. Every Tuesday
evening they dance in Cuernavaca at the city Plaza. Also sometimes in the other
towns (pueblos).

Teotihuacán ~ Pyramid of the Gods
"Teotihuacán
was the religious center of Mesoamerica. Its skyline was dominated by two
enormous pyramids which the Aztecs called the "Pyramid of the Sun" and the
"Pyramid of the Moon," both linked by a broad avenue. It was a planned city of
over two thousand structures. While farmers primarily
lived in wooden houses, other inhabitants lived in stone houses decorated with
paintings and murals and, in some cases, with elaborate drainage systems.
It is a city shrouded in mystery. Who were these people? What was daily life like? What gods did they worship? Just as mysterious was its sudden demise. Beginning around 700 AD, people simply stopped living in the city. Why they left is anyone's guess. Archaeologists have found evidence that a great fire decimated just about every structure in the city in 700 AD and some argue that the fire was caused by an invading people. Whatever the cause, the city never really recovered from the disaster and all its magnificence came to an end". - Richard Hooker

Markets of the People ~
Shopping in
the town markets is one of the most enjoyable aspects, let alone the
most
colorful, in all of Mexico. Here the people gather early in the morning,
small children with their parents, aunts and uncles, to sell what ever they can.
Many markets are organized into areas for each type of item: fruits & vegtables,
woven goods, pottery, silver & jewelry, but others jumble up and you never know
what is around the next corner. Always there are treasures to be found.
The sights, sounds and smells are truly delightful. Each town (pueblo) has
it's own market. The people are so friendly and open. If you just try at
all to communicate with them, they smile and welcome you to their culture. We've
made many friends in the last few years just visiting in the Markets and so can
you.

Taxco ~ Silver Capital of the World
Ladies and
Gents ~ here we can shop 'til we drop. There are over 400 shops selling
Silver. Special good prices are easy to find. Taxco, the town (1990 pop.
43,836), Guerrero state, S Mexico. Founded in 1529 as a silver-mining
community, Taxco was also an important stop between Mexico City and Acapulco in
Spanish colonial trade with the Philippines. It achieved real prominence as a
mining center under José de la Borda, who after 1717 constructed roads and built
the superb colonial church. Clinging to the side of a mountain, Taxco is a
splendid example of the Spanish colonial town, with steep, cobbled streets,
overhanging grilled balconies, red-tile roofs, and glazed tiles set in white or
pastel adobe walls. Modern buildings are prohibited, and colonial monuments are
protected by the Mexican government. A famous center of silver smithing, Taxco
attracts artists, writers, and tourists. The full name of the city is Taxco de
Alarcón.

Las Grutas de Cacahuamilpa ~ Natural Wonder Caverns
Grottos are
considered like more great and beautiful of Planet, through them, it is
possible
to find two rivers underground that they are the Chontalcoatlán, whose extension
is of approximately 8 Kilometers, as well as San Jero'nimo that measure 12
kilometers, both are bordered by sand beaches and the dark is total in most of
the way. The caverns are integrated by different ample cavities that they are
designated with the name of "Halls", covered by limestone concretions that hang
of the ceiling (stalactites) or ascend of the floor (estalagmitas). This
guided tour is about 2 hours in and then we can take our time coming back out.
I found it easy to be alone and explore the spiritual energies of this majestic
cavern. It was used by the Mexican people to hide when the Spaniards
overran the area.

Tepotzotlán and the Pyramid of Tepozteco
We will spend the night in Tepoztlan. On Sunday we will explore their amazing market and cobbled stone streets. This is one of the Spiritual Centers of Mexico. Then on Monday we will climb up to the Pyramid of Tepozteco. There we will offer gifts of corn to the Gods and spend some quiet time.
Tepotzotlán
means "place of abundant copper", is a small
town nestled between craggy cliffs located to the south of Mexico City in the
State of
Morelos.
The town is about 1,700 meters (5,500 ft)
above sea level and at a distance of some 18 kilometers from Cuernavaca.
Tepotzotlán is a peaceful village where pigs and burros still abound in the street and the sound of cocks crows pierces the early morning hours, and the local residents are fiercely proud and protective of their cultural heritage. It is a town of legends and deep cultural roots that has been appreciated by writers, poets, artists and musicians over many decades and centuries.
In the valleys between the rocky peaks that hug the town corn, beans, chiles and squash are grown in addition to larger cash crops of tomatoes and gladiola flowers.
Regional specialties here include Green Mole (made from ground pumpkin seeds), Red mole with turkey, cecina (dried, salt-cured meat) either with cheese and cream or rubbed with a chile sauce, and tlacoyos (corn pockets) filled with beans.
